What it means to be a Belong Counselor
Our amazing team of counselors is the core of the Belong conference that make it all possible. A youth’s counselor can make or break their experience. Being a counselor means you are ready to take on the mantle of mentoring a group of beautifully diverse youth. In the course of the conference you’ll wear many hats. Besides mentor you will be a leader, confidant, hype person, time manager, teacher, caretaker, heart mender and smile maker. You will be with the participants throughout the program, eating meals with them, playing games, sharing their experiences, and helping them to feel real belonging.
What it takes to be a Belong Counselor?
Be passionate about being a mentor to LGBTQIA+ teenagers and allies.
Be affirming to LGBTQIA+ youth however they identify as gender and sexuality and wherever they are at spiritually.
Be able to foster belonging and inclusivity and create a safe space for the youth to be their authentic self.
Be a positive influence to your youth and model good social and communication skills.
Be a leader able to guide, inspire, problem solve and create unity.
Be ready to work hard, have fun and change lives.
Align with Our Mission
Belong has a mission to help LGBTQIA+ teenagers and allies feel belonging and give them tools to build resilience and spiritual health in an identity affirming and religiously neutral space. We are looking for counselors who are not only passionate about this mission but also dedicated to making every participant feel valued and included.
Key Details for Prospective Counselors
Dates: June 26th-28th. Training starts at 8 am on June 26th before participant check in at 2pm.
Time Commitment: Counselors will be expected to read the handbook and watch training materials before the event, then be present through all of the in person training and full participation throughout the conference.
Travel Stipend: A small stipend will be provided to help cover travel expenses.
